Comet Hale-Bopp over the Sleeping Lady

Comet Hale-Bopp over the Sleeping Lady

A view of Comet Hale-Bopp over Mt Susitna, aka by the locals as “The Sleeping Lady”, at sunset.  The original black and white image was taken in 1997 from the western-most point of the Anchorage peninsula.  I set up my camera 1-2 miles from the nearest public road from a land shelf sticking out into Cook Inlet.  The 60 second exposure made a clear image of the comet but since i did not use an astronomical mount under my camera, I recorded slight star tracks.  We were observing one of Anchorage’s spectacular sunsets transitioning from yellow to orange to a very deep pink and finally into darkness.  I later hand colored this picture similar to how I wanted to remember the colors.
