Fish Drying

Fish Drying along the Novakaket Slough

Just looking at these fish camp pictures I can smell birch smoke.  And you can sometimes smell the smoke from a fish camp for some distance.  When I started thinking about it, how do they keep the local bears from just walking in and taking all your fish?  How do you keep the famous Alaskan bugs from totally taking over?  The answer is birch smoke.  While the fish are hanging out to dry, a fire is burning underneath the fish; not to provide heat but to keep the bugs and bears away.  Tending the fires is often the job of the youngest children.
